Buying Your Lot

Seeking a lot or property for your new home takes diligence and knowledge. Choosing the right lot to build your dream home on involves a variety of important decisions. See our Lot Buying Checklist for information on choosing a lot.

Location, Location, Location
The first thing to consider is the location. You can ask yourself the following questions:
1. Will you feel most comfortable living near a town, metropolitan area or secluded area? Think about your lifestyle and the everyday tasks you need to accomplish.
2. Are homes of comparable value to the value of the home you want built in this area? Overbuilding and underbuilding has implications for appraisals and property values.
3. Are you comfortable with the commute to work? Consider making teh drive at the same times you travel to and from work.

Next, examine the property's terrain since it affects construction costs. For example, hilly land may provide a beautiful setting and views but it can be more expensive to build a home as compared to flatter or gently-sloped terrain. Take notice of the orientation of the lot to determine how it will look in the different seasons. Visit the property several times to ensure that the property is right for your family.
