Moving Assistance
Moving to your new home doesn’t have to be hectic and stressful.
The following information has been designed to help make the move
to your new home more manageable.
Planning Your Move
Here is a checklist to make your move
manageable and keep you on track.
Two Months Before You Move:
ऄ Clean
out the attic, garage, storage shed, and similar areas of additional
clutter.
ऄ Research information about your new community and get
a copy of your floor plan.
ऄ Use the copy of your floor plan to decide what household
items to keep.
ऄ Inventory your personal possessions and create a list.
ऄ Contact at least three moving companies and request a
price to move your belongings to your new home.

Create an accordion file for all moving
documentation and items.
ऄ Contact the IRS to find out what will be tax-deductible.
ऄ Make arrangements with your children’s former and
new schools or day care centers.
Week Seven Before:
ऄ Contact your company health care provider for referrals
for doctors, dentists, and other professionals.
ऄ Contact clubs and organizations for which you have memberships
to find out how to end, sell, or transfer.
ऄ Check your homeowner’s insurance to determine what
is covered in the move. Also, inquire about changes to your policy
and arrange for insurance on your new home.
Week Six Before:
ऄ Evaluate your possessions list for items that can be donated.
Keep receipts for tax deductions in your file.
ऄ Prepare a list of valuable and irreplaceable items for
special handling or move yourself.
ऄ Prepare a list everyone that you need to notify of your
move.
ऄ Clean out closets and other interior spaces.
ऄ Decide which moving company to hire and make arrangements
with the mover.
Week Five Before:
ऄ Take items on your donations list to local charities.
ऄ Purchase any boxes and moving supplies that your mover
does not provide.
ऄ Complete change of address forms at your local post office
or online (www.usps.com).
One Month Before:
ऄ Begin packing
ऄ Contact the utility companies and notify them you are
moving.
ऄ Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles and inform them
of your new address.
ऄ Gather all important documentation and put them in your
moving file.
ऄ Contact insurance carriers and inform them of your move
date.
ऄ Make arrangements for childcare, if necessary, for moving
day.
ऄ Properly dispose of all flammables, corrosives, poisons,
or other unwanted items.
Week Two Before;
ऄ Contact moving company to confirm arrangements and review
logistics.
ऄ Keep packing.
ऄ Mail the change of address notifications to your family,
friends, and other contacts.
Week One Before:
ऄ Pack a box of living essentials and label for use when
you arrive in your new home.
ऄ Pack your suitcases with clothing to wear in the immediate
days after your arrival.
ऄ Complete your packing.
ऄ Use up remaining perishable items and clean the refrigerator.
ऄ Print out or write down the driving directions, including
emergency telephone numbers, for your moving company.
ऄ Contact your newspaper company to cancel or transfer the
subscription.
ऄ Order and pick up prescriptions to have enough for two
weeks.
ऄ Prepare a box or bag with food for moving day and the
next day.
ऄ Go to bank for extra cash for traveling expenses and your
moving company.
